SUMMARY:From Images to Insight: Measuring Pathology in People Living with Multiple Sclerosis - Sridar Narayanan\, PhD
\nDate :      Jeudi 9 avril 2026 à 9 h \nEndroit : Pavillon Paul-G. Desmarais\, local 1120. \n  \nConférencier: Sridar Narayanan\, PhD \nAssistant Professor McConnell Brain Imaging Centre\, \nMontreal Neurological Institute-Hospital Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery\, \nMcGill University \n  \nFrom Images to Insight: Measuring Pathology in People Living with Multiple Sclerosis \nMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is central to diagnosing and monitoring multiple sclerosis (MS) and has helped develop effective therapies that reduce relapses and new lesions. However\, many people with MS-especially those with progressive MS-continue to worsen even when inflammatory activity is well controlled. This highlights the need for MRI markers that reflect disease processes related to progression rather than relapses alone. \nThis presentation introduces emerging MRI techniques that measure tissue damage and repair beyond conventional lesion count and volume measures. These include imaging markers of remyelination\, cortical demyelination\, and chronic active (“smoldering”) lesions\, which are associated with ongoing tissue injury and disability progression. In addition\, imaging of the choroid plexus suggests a possible role for blood–CSF barrier dysfunction in diffuse brain injury. \nTogether\, these approaches provide new insights into why disability accumulates in MS and offer promising tools for studying progression and evaluating future treatments.
DESCRIPTION:Département de microbiologie\, infectiologie et immunologie \nAs part of our upcoming departmental seminar\, we are pleased to welcome Éric Déziel\, Professor at INRS–Institut Armand-Frappier\, and invited speaker of Dr. Marylise Duperthuy. The presentation will be delivered in French. \nProf. Déziel is a recognized expert in microbiology\, particularly in the field of sociomicrobiology. His research explores the complex social behaviors of microorganisms\, including intercellular communication (quorum sensing)\, multicellular organization\, and bacterial motility. His work focuses notably on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia\, as well as on microbial metabolites such as biosurfactants\, with the aim of developing innovative alternatives to conventional antibiotics. \nConférencier    :      Dr Éric Déziel \nDate et heure `:       9 avril 2026 à 11 h 30 \nLieu                  :      Pavillon Roger-Gaudry\, 2900\, boulevard Édouard-Montpetit\, Local N-833\, UdeM \n  \nYou will find below the summary of his presentation: \n \n  \nWe look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Towards understanding transcript-specific regulation by short and highly structured non-coding RNAs. - Dr Sean McKenna
\nTowards understanding transcript-specific regulation by short and highly structured non-coding RNAs. ‘’\nExploring nucleic acid molecules as cancer biomarkers and targets for drug development is a very promising alternative to historically studied proteins. A recently uncovered class of nucleic acid molecules (known as non-coding RNA) has emerged as strong candidates for regulating a variety of cancer-related cellular processes. BC200 RNA is a 200 nucleotide\, primate-specific\, non-coding RNA that is produced at high levels in invasive carcinomas\, whereas in normal tissue or benign tumors BC200 is not detectable at significant levels. Remarkably\, studies of BC200 knockdown by our group and others demonstrate tumour-cell specific suppression of cell growth. We therefore are focused on the role that BC200 plays in tumour cell proliferation/migration and investigating possible therapeutic approaches to disrupt BC200 function. Our work suggests that this nucleic acid molecule presents a cancer-specific target. We aim to characterize its predictive usefulness as a prognosis of cancer outcome and define the potential for therapeutic development. I will present recent work from my research group using molecular biology and biochemistry approaches.
