Bacterial infections that are refractory to antibiotic treatment lead to poor health outcomes. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major opportunistic pathogen that causes a multitude of difficult-to-treat human infections, both acute and chronic. P. aeruginosa not only displays intrinsic resistance to many antibiotics, but also antibiotic tolerance and host-evasion strategies. The Nguyen lab investigates bacterial mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions that contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic airway infections in individuals with cystic fibrosis, as well as novel therapeutic approaches to improve P. aeruginosa clearance.
