Terms and conditions

Browsing or using the websites and mobile applications (Platforms) operated by the Université de Montréal (UdeM) is subject to these terms of use (these Terms of Use) and applicable laws.

By continuing to browse or use the Platforms, you expressly accept these Terms of Use. They constitute an agreement between you and UdeM regarding access to and use of the Platforms.

UdeM reserves the right to modify these Terms of Use without notice. It is your sole responsibility to check the content regularly. If you do not agree with these Terms of Use, you must immediately stop using the Platforms.

External websites

The Platforms contain hyperlinks to other websites (external sites). These hyperlinks are provided for your information.

The content of external sites, the links contained therein, the products or services provided on these sites are in no way approved, controlled or authorized by UdeM. UdeM assumes no responsibility for these external sites and cannot be held liable for any damages arising from, among other things, the following:

  • any content, links, advertising, products, services or other materials available on external sites; or
  • the use of external sites; or
  • a failure by these external sites to protect your personal information.

UdeM may modify, add or delete hyperlinks available on its Platforms at any time.

Property

The content available on the Platforms, including documents, text, images, illustrations, software, audio clips and video clips (Content), is the property of UdeM or is provided by UdeM (or its suppliers, as the case may be). Unless otherwise indicated, you must obtain prior written authorization from UdeM before using, copying, publishing or distributing the Content.

Use of the Platforms

All communication via the Platforms must respect UdeM students, employees and other visitors. UdeM cannot be held responsible for offences committed by visitors to its Platforms. UdeM reserves the right to modify, limit or refuse access to the Platforms at any time, without prior notice.

Applicable laws

The Platforms and these Terms of Use are governed by the laws applicable in Quebec. Any litigation or dispute relating thereto shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of this province, in the district of Montreal.

Warranty exclusions

The Platforms and Content are provided “as is”. Although UdeM takes reasonable measures to keep them up to date, they may be modified at any time. Consequently, UdeM cannot guarantee the following:

  • that the Content is up-to-date, accurate or complete; or
  • the performance of the Platforms or their suitability for a particular purpose or their operation without interruption or free of errors, defects, viruses or other harmful components.

Limitation of liability

UdeM assumes no responsibility for damages or inconveniences arising from the Platforms or the Content, including the following:

  • the use, interruption, unavailability, non-accessibility or non-functioning of the Platforms or the Content; or
  • any errors, omissions or inaccuracies in the Content; or
  • incompatibility of the Platforms with your devices or computer systems; or
  • the presence of contaminating or damaging elements in your equipment or computer systems.

UdeM assumes no responsibility for any unauthorized access to your computer system or for the quality, reliability, compatibility or speed of the services provided to you by your Internet service provider.

Witness policy

Our policy sets out the options for managing cookies and helps you decide what information you wish to send us when you browse our sites.

This Cookie Usage Policy supplements our Privacy Policy.

Protection of personal information

The protection of personal information collected by UdeM, including that obtained through the Platforms, is governed by the Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information and the UdeM Policy on the protection of personal information. However, this policy does not apply to external sites.

UdeM undertakes to use the personal information collected only for the purposes agreed upon and to retain it only for as long as necessary to provide the service requested, in accordance with UdeM’s retention schedule and applicable laws.

Witnesses

When you use or browse the Platforms, data is automatically exchanged between your device and UdeM servers. The main types of data collected on the Platforms are cookies and personalization parameters.

Cookies are small text files that are downloaded when you visit certain pages of a site and stored in the memory of the device you are using. They record certain information (browser type, language, country, identifier, etc.) so that it can be retrieved by the server on subsequent visits. They are used to update and optimize our Platforms according to your use and needs.

UdeM collects data on the Platforms in order to analyze their use and improve the visitor experience.

UdeM also uses the services of Google Analyticsto analyze web traffic and collect navigation data for statistical purposes and to improve the Platforms.

Witnesses are classified into 4 categories according to their function.

Witnesses required

These cookies are essential for the proper operation and security of our Web sites and online services. They cannot be deactivated. In particular, they enable us to secure your connection by collecting your identification information, personalize your interface (e.g. language selection) and store your preferences.

In particular, the following information is collected:

  • the language used by the browser ;
  • browser type and version ;
  • operating system type and version ;
  • device type and model (phone, tablet or computer) ;
  • the screen resolution of the device you’re using.

Performance indicators

These cookies are used to analyze navigation on our sites (origin of visitors, frequency of visits, pages visited more or less frequently, etc.) in order to improve their operation and offer visitors a better user experience. All information collected by these cookies is aggregated and therefore anonymized.

Function indicators

These cookies enable us to improve the functionality and personalization of our sites. For example, they make it possible to use videos and instant messaging services, or to share content from our sites on social media platforms. If you disable these cookies, your browsing experience and the services we are able to offer you may be affected.

Advertising cookies

These cookies can be activated on our websites to build up profiles of your interests. They help us to offer you personalized advertising and content. If you deactivate these cookies, you will be offered ads and content that are less targeted to your interests.

Invisible pixels

UdeM may also use invisible pixels. Pixels are tiny, invisible images that are integrated into the Platforms. Unlike cookies, they are not placed on your device.

UdeM uses web beacons to determine, anonymously, the number of times you have visited one of the Platforms, and to identify the Platforms that interest you. UdeM uses this information, with the help of Google Analytics and Facebook, for retargeting and targeted advertising. For example, when you browse a Google or Facebook website, that site may show you advertising about the University.

Web beacons do not contain any personal information but may contain a unique identifier necessary for retargeting and targeted advertising.

Deactivate or restrict data collection

You can disable or restrict data collection on the Platforms in several ways:

  1. by selecting the appropriate settings in your browser to refuse cookies, although this deactivation may prevent the use of all Web functionalities; or
  2. downloading a browser add-on to disable Google Analytics ; or
  3. using the procedure to restrict targeted ads on Facebook.
